JEWELRY - Platinum Jewelry

Platinum has wear and tarnish resistance characteristics and well suited for making fine jewelry. Platinum is more precious than gold.

Platinum is a pure metal, silvery-white in colour and it is lustrous, ductile, and malleable. It does not oxidize at any temperature, but it gets corroded by halogens, cyanides, sulphur and caustic alkalis. Platinum is insoluble in hydrochloric and nitric acid, but dissolves in aqua regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid.) to form Chloroplatinic Acid.

It usually is mixed with other similar metals, known as the platinum group metals: iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium and osmium. Different markings are used on platinum jewelry as compared with gold jewelry, based on the amount of pure platinum in the piece. Jewelry that contains at least 950 parts per thousand of pure platinum is marked or described as "Platinum" (95% platinum and 5% other metals.)

Platinum's real, white luster match perfectly and complements diamonds and other precious gems. Its neutral colour enhances a stone's brilliance and depth.
