Hair - How to prevent / cure Dandruff

Dandruff is a condition of accumulation of the dead cells in larger visible aggregates, flaking and itchy scalp. When the hair is combed or brushed, or when the scalp is scratched, the scales like flakes fall from the scalp and settle on the eye brows, shoulders, and clothes.

The exact cause of dandruff is not known. Dandruff is not infectious and cannot catch it by just using the comb of a person who is suffering this problem as the flakes that one sees on comb are dead cells. But the situation can become troublesome when the skin gets infected. Dandruff may later prove to be some other condition, such as seborrhea dermatitis, or even Psoriasis or neurodermatitis and it is very important to treat well at the early stage itself.

Dandruff may an indication of a zinc deficiency. The zinc- rich food like shellfish, red meat and pumpkin seeds should be included in your diet.

Cleansing is most important for prevention and cure. A simple and good cleansing preparation is given below.

Resorcinol 5 gm
Salicylic acid 5 gm
Glycerin 5 cc
Alcohol 70 % 250 cc

Mix all items together and apply on hair and scalp and wash well or use medicated shampoo specifically designed to remove dandruff. These shampoos may contain selenium sulphate, zinc pyrithione or coal tar which will reduce the production and help the quick removal of scales. But people who suffer dry scalp should avoid the frequent use of shampoo as it can lead to eczema. Also avoid shampoos that contain sodium laurel sulfate, or sodium laureate sulfate. It is always better to use simple home remedies.
